At the origins of a “suave” tradition

Today we want to share something about our land, some news and curiosities in order to keep the memory and the traditions alive, so the things that the elders of Soave tell us, will not end up in the oblivion.
In order to let you know our reality at its fullest, we want to start a short digression about what is at the origins of the winegrowing tradition in Soave.
In the roman age Soave was a rural center, characterized by a strategic position, with military settlements on the hill (where now we see the castle) and the valley was an important arterial road of the Via Postumia (a long road connecting the north-east to the north-west).
Given its ancient origin, there is still an open debate on the etymology of the current name Soave.
According to the most esteemed opinion, Soave got the name from a germanic community called Svevi (Suaves, or Soavi in italian) who arrived in this land during the barbarian invasions. That was also the time when the human settlement and the agricultural activities moved from the level ground, muddy and wild, to a salubrious land, ideal for viticulture and olive growing (and Soave was the perfect place).
The ancient winegrowing tradition of Soave is testified by a letter dated back to the VI century, written by Cassiodoro (the minister of the barbarian king Teodorico) who described the wine here produced as “of a beautiful whiteness and light clarity, that seems to be born from lilies flowers…suave and well bodied, with a jovial whiteness and incredibly pleasing “.
Soave is not only the name of our land, but it also a natural quality of the wines here produced!

    Keep your curiosity alive, always.

    A presto, VM
