Pinot Grigio, from Igt to Doc
An important change for Pinot Grigio IGT that, starting with the vintage 2017, is becoming DOC delle Venezie. Well, a “super “ Doc we should say, since it covers such a large area.
Pinot Grigio is the 4th grape variety grown in Italy, but the real protagonists are the regions of Triveneto (Veneto, Trentino e Friuli Venezia Giulia) growing about the 85% of the total italian production of Pinot Grigio and the 43% of the global production.
Big numbers that led the Pinot Grigio from being an IGT to a Controlled Denomination of Origin and Prowein 2018 was the springboard for its presentation on the international market.
The new Pinot Grigio Doc delle Venezie includes the ex-IGT and all the production from Triveneto.
It is a great change, aimed at adding value to this wine and giving more guarantees and quality standards to customers.
But what's the real change from IGT to DOC?
Thanks to this classification system, the quality of wine has greatly increased.
The disciplinare describes where the vineyards must be grown and where the wine must be produced in, the allowed grape varieties, how the wine must be vinificated and it gives a quality standard of its colour, flavors, aromas, alcohol content etc.
If a wine doesn't fit in one of these strict rules, the wine cannot be labeled as a DOC.
In order to be named Pinot Grigio Doc delle Venezie the wine, that must respect all the rules on the disciplinare, will go through a certification procedure, starting with chemycal/physical analysis to an organoleptic evaluation.
What is the difference between IGT and DOC wines?
The rules that must be followed for a DOC are way stricter that IGT.
The IGT is used for the best table wines, obtained from larger production areas compared to the DOC wines, whose precise grapes must be grown on a precise area.
